Early life

Childhood and family

Further information: Musk family

Elon Reeve Musk was born on June 28, 1971, in Pretoria, South Africa.[7] His mother is Maye Musk (née Haldeman), a model and dietitian born in Saskatchewan, Canada,[8][9][10] but raised in South Africa. His father is Errol Musk, a White South African electromechanical engineer, pilot, sailor, consultant, and property developer who was once a half-owner of a Zambian emerald mine near Lake Tanganyika.[11][12] Musk has a younger brother, Kimbal (born 1972), and a younger sister, Tosca (born 1974).[10][13] His maternal grandfather, Joshua Haldeman, was an adventurous American-born Canadian who took his family on record-breaking journeys in a single-engine Bellanca airplane to Africa and Australia;[14][15][16] Musk has British and Pennsylvania Dutch ancestry.[17][18] When Musk was a child, his adenoids were removed because doctors suspected that he was deaf, but his mother later decided that he was thinking "in another world."[19] The family was very wealthy in Elon's youth; Errol Musk once said, "We had so much money at times we couldn't even close our safe".[12] Elon's father was also elected to the Pretoria City Council as a representative of the anti-apartheid Progressive Party, with the Musk children reportedly sharing their father's dislike of apartheid.[20] After his parents divorced in 1980, Musk mostly lived with his father in Pretoria and elsewhere,[17] a choice he made two years after the divorce and subsequently regretted.[21] Musk has become estranged from his father, whom he describes as "a terrible human being... Almost every evil thing you could possibly think of, he has done."[21] He has a half-sister and a half-brother on his father's side.[14][22] Elon attended an Anglican Sunday school in his youth.[23] Around age 10, Musk developed an interest in computing and video games and acquired a Commodore VIC-20.[24][25] He learned computer programming using a manual and, at age 12, sold the code of a BASIC-based video game he created called Blastar to PC and Office Technology magazine for approximately $500.[26][27] An awkward and introverted child,[28] Musk was bullied throughout his childhood and was once hospitalized after a group of boys threw him down a flight of stairs.[21][29] He attended Waterkloof House Preparatory School and Bryanston High School before graduating from Pretoria Boys High School.[30]

Education

Musk graduated from Pretoria Boys High School in South Africa.

Aware that it would be easier to enter the United States from Canada,[31] Musk applied for a Canadian passport through his Canadian-born mother.[32][33] While awaiting the documentation, he attended the University of Pretoria for five months; this allowed him to avoid mandatory service in the South African military.[34] Musk arrived in Canada in June 1989, and lived with a second cousin in Saskatchewan for a year,[35] working odd jobs at a farm and lumber-mill.[36] In 1990, he entered Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario.[37][38] Two years later, he transferred to the University of Pennsylvania, where he graduated in 1997 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in physics and a Bachelor of Science degree in economics from the Wharton School.[39][40][41]

In 1994, Musk held two internships in Silicon Valley during the summer: at energy storage startup Pinnacle Research Institute, which researched electrolytic ultracapacitors for energy storage, and at the Palo Alto-based startup Rocket Science Games.[42] In 1995, he was accepted to a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) program in materials science at Stanford University in California.[43] Musk attempted to get a job at Netscape but never received a response to his inquiries.[32] He dropped out of Stanford after two days, deciding instead to join the Internet boom and launch an Internet startup.[44]

Business career Zip2

In 1995, Musk, his brother Kimbal, and Greg Kouri founded web software company Zip2 with funds from angel investors.[21] They housed the venture at a small rented office in Palo Alto.[45] The company developed and marketed an Internet city guide for the newspaper publishing industry, with maps, directions, and yellow pages.[46] Musk says that before the company became successful, he could not afford an apartment and instead rented an office and slept on the couch and showered at the YMCA, and shared one computer with his brother. When he and Kimbal could not agree on business decisions, they settled their differences through wrestling.[47] According to Musk, "The website was up during the day and I was coding it at night, seven days a week, all the time."[45] The Musk brothers obtained contracts with The New York Times and the Chicago Tribune,[48] and persuaded the board of directors to abandon plans for a merger with CitySearch.[49] Musk's attempts to become CEO, a position held by its Chairman Rich Sorkin,[50] were thwarted by the board.[51] Compaq acquired Zip2 for $307 million in cash in February 1999,[52][53] and Musk received $22 million for his 7-percent share.[54][55]

X.com and PayPal Main articles: X.comPayPal, and PayPal Mafia

In 1999, Musk co-founded X.com, an online financial services and e-mail payment company.[56] The startup was one of the first federally insured online banks, and, in its initial months of operation, over 200,000 customers joined the service.[57] The company's investors regarded Musk as inexperienced and had him replaced with Intuit CEO Bill Harris by the end of the year.[58] The following year, X.com merged with online bank Confinity to avoid competition.[45][58][59] Founded by Max Levchin and Peter Thiel,[60] Confinity had its own money-transfer service, PayPal, which was more popular than X.com's service.[54][61] Within the merged company, Musk returned as CEO. Musk's preference for Microsoft software over Unix created a rift in the company and caused Thiel to resign.[62] Due to resulting technological issues and lack of a cohesive business model, the board ousted Musk and replaced him with Thiel in September 2000.[63][b] Under Thiel, the company focused on the PayPal service and was renamed PayPal in 2001.[65][66] In 2002 PayPal was acquired by eBay for $1.5 billion in stock, of which Musk—the largest shareholder with 11.72% of shares—received $175.8 million.[67][68]

In 2017 Musk purchased the domain X.com from PayPal for an undisclosed amount, explaining it has sentimental value.[69][70]

SpaceX

In 2001 Musk became involved with the nonprofit Mars Society. He was inspired by plans to place a growth-chamber for plants on Mars and discussed funding the project himself.[71] In October 2001, Musk traveled to Moscow with Jim Cantrell and Mike Griffin to buy refurbished Intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) that could send the greenhouse payloads into space. He met with companies NPO Lavochkin and Kosmotras; however, Musk was seen as a novice and was even spat on by one of the Russian chief designers. The group returned to the United States empty-handed. In February 2002, the group returned to Russia to look for three ICBMs. They had another meeting with Kosmotras and were offered one rocket for $8 million, which Musk rejected. Musk instead decided to start a company that could build affordable rockets.[72] With $100 million of his early fortune,[73] Musk founded Space Exploration Technologies Corp., traded as SpaceX, in May 2002.[74] As of 2021, he remains the company's CEO and also holds the title of Chief Engineer.[75]

SpaceX attempted its first launch of the Falcon 1 rocket in 2006,[76] and although the rocket failed to reach Earth orbit, it was awarded a Commercial Orbital Transportation Services program contract from NASA later that year.[77] After two more failed attempts, which reportedly caused Musk so much stress that he was "waking from nightmares, screaming and in physical pain",[78] SpaceX succeeded in launching the Falcon 1 into orbit in 2008, making it the first private liquid-fuel rocket to do so.[79] Later that year, SpaceX received a $1.6 billion Commercial Resupply Services program contract from NASA for 12 flights of its Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon spacecraft to the International Space Station, replacing the Space Shuttle after its 2011 retirement.[80] In 2012 the Dragon vehicle berthed with the ISS, a first for a private enterprise.[81]

Working towards its goal of reusable rockets, in 2015 SpaceX successfully landed the first stage of a Falcon 9.[82] Landings were later achieved on an autonomous spaceport drone ship, an ocean-based recovery platform.[83] In 2018 SpaceX launched the Falcon Heavy; the inaugural mission carried Musk's personal Tesla Roadster as a dummy payload.[84][85] In 2017 SpaceX unveiled its next-generation launch vehicle and spacecraft system, Big Falcon Rocket, later renamed to Starship, which would support all SpaceX launch service provider capabilities.[86] In 2018 SpaceX announced a planned 2023 lunar circumnavigation mission, a private flight called dearMoon project.[87] In 2020 SpaceX launched its first crewed flight, the Demo-2, becoming the first private company to place a person into orbit and dock a crewed spacecraft with the ISS.[88]

SpaceX began development of the Starlink constellation of low Earth orbit satellites in 2015 to provide satellite Internet access,[89] with the first two prototype satellites launched in February 2018. A second set of test satellites and the first large deployment of a piece of the constellation occurred in May 2019, when the first 60 operational satellites were launched.[90] The total cost of the decade-long project to design, build, and deploy the constellation is estimated by SpaceX to be about $10 billion.[91][c]

The company has attracted criticism from astronomers who say Starlink's satellites are blocking the view of the skies, and from experts arguing that they risk colliding and causing dangers in space.[94][95] Musk rejected the criticism, stating that the impact of satellites is "nothing" and that "space is just extremely enormous, and satellites are very tiny."[94]

Tesla Main article: Tesla, Inc.

Musk next to a Tesla Model S at the Tesla Fremont Factory in 2011 Tesla, Inc.—originally Tesla Motors—was incorporated in July 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning, who financed the company until the Series A round of funding.[96] Both men played active roles in the company's early development prior to Musk's involvement.[97] Musk led the Series A round of investment in February 2004; he invested $6.5 million, became the majority shareholder, and joined Tesla's board of directors as chairman.[98][99] Musk took an active role within the company and oversaw Roadster product design but was not deeply involved in day-to-day business operations.[100] Following a series of escalating conflicts in 2007 and the 2008 financial crisis, Eberhard was ousted from the firm.[101][102] Musk assumed leadership of the company as CEO and product architect in 2008.[103] A 2009 lawsuit settlement with Eberhard designated Musk as a Tesla co-founder, along with Tarpenning and two others.[104][105] As of 2019, Elon Musk was the longest tenured CEO of any automotive manufacturer globally.[106] In 2021 Musk nominally changed his title to "Technoking" while retaining his position as CEO.[107]

Tesla first built an electric sports car, the Roadster, in 2008. With sales of about 2,500 vehicles, it was the first serial production all-electric car to use lithium-ion battery cells.[108] Tesla began delivery of its four-door Model S sedan in 2012;[109] a cross-over, the Model X was launched in 2015.[110][111] A mass market sedan, the Model 3, was released in 2017.[112][113] The Model 3 is the all-time best-selling plug-in electric car worldwide, and, in June 2021, became the first electric car to sell 1 million units globally.[114][115] A fifth vehicle, the Model Y crossover, was launched in 2020.[116] The Cybertruck, an all-electric pickup truck, was unveiled in 2019.[117] Under Musk, Tesla has also constructed multiple lithium-ion battery and electric vehicle factories, such as Gigafactory 1 in Nevada, Gigafactory 2 in New York, Gigafactory 3 in China, Gigafactory 4 in Germany and Gigafactory 5 in Texas.[118][119][120][121][122][123]

Since its initial public offering in 2010,[124] Tesla stock has risen significantly; it became the most valuable carmaker in summer 2020,[125][126] and it entered the S&P 500 later that year.[127][128] In October 2021 it reached a market capitalization of $1 trillion, the sixth company to do so in U.S. history.[129] On November 6, 2021, Musk proposed on Twitter selling 10% of his Tesla stock, since "much is made lately of unrealized gains being a means of tax avoidance".[130][131] After more than 3.5 million Twitter accounts supported the sale, Musk sold $6.9 billion of Tesla stock in the week ending November 12,[130] and a total of $16.4 billion by year end, reaching the 10% target.[132] In February 2022, The Wall Street Journal reported that both Elon and Kimbal Musk were under investigation by the SEC for possible insider trading related to the sale.[133]

SolarCity and Tesla Energy Main articles: SolarCity and Tesla Energy

Musk provided the initial concept and financial capital for SolarCity, which his cousins Lyndon and Peter Rive co-founded in 2006.[151] By 2013, SolarCity was the second largest provider of solar power systems in the United States.[152] In 2014 Musk promoted the idea of SolarCity building an advanced production facility in Buffalo, New York, triple the size of the largest solar plant in the United States.[153] Construction on the factory started in 2014 and was completed in 2017. It operated as a joint venture with Panasonic until early 2020 when Panasonic departed.[154][155]

Tesla acquired SolarCity for over $2 billion in 2016 and merged it with its battery energy storage products division to create Tesla Energy.

Neuralink Main article: Neuralink

In 2016 Musk co-founded Neuralink, a neurotechnology startup company to integrate the human brain with artificial intelligence (AI) by creating devices that are embedded in the human brain to facilitate its merging with machines. The devices will also reconcile with the latest improvements in AI to stay updated. Such improvements could enhance memory or allow the devices to communicate with software more effectively.[156][157]

At a live demonstration in August 2020, Musk described one of their early devices as "a Fitbit in your skull" that could soon cure paralysis, deafness, blindness, and other disabilities. Many neuroscientists and publications criticized these claims;[158][159][160] MIT Technology Review described them as "highly speculative" and "neuroscience theater".[158] On the other hand, biomedical engineer Peter Bannister has defended Musk's sci-fi–inspired rhetorical overreach as inspirational for aspiring engineers and scientists.[161]

The Boring Company Main article: The Boring Company

In 2016, Musk founded The Boring Company to construct tunnels.[162] In early 2017, the company began discussions with regulatory bodies and initiated construction of a 30-foot (9.1 m) wide, 50-foot (15 m) long, and 15-foot (4.6 m) deep "test trench" on the premises of SpaceX's offices as it required no permits.[163] A tunnel beneath the Las Vegas Convention Center was completed in early 2021.[164] Local officials have approved further expansions of the tunnel system.[165]

As a merchandising and publicity stunt, The Boring Company sold 2,000 novelty flamethrowers in 2018.[166][167] The idea, and his fascination with the idea of a flamethrower in general, was inspired by the Mel Brooks-directed film Spaceballs (1987), something confirmed in the documentary film Return to Space, directed by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin.[168][169]

Hyperloop Main articles: Hyperloop and Hyperloop pod competition

In 2013 Musk announced plans for a version of a vactrain (or vacuum tube train), assigning a dozen engineers from Tesla and SpaceX to establish the conceptual foundations and create initial designs.[180] On August 12, 2013, Musk unveiled the concept, which he dubbed the Hyperloop.[181] The alpha design for the system was published in a whitepaper posted to the Tesla and SpaceX blogs.[182] The document scoped out the technology and outlined a notional route where such a transport system could be built between the Greater Los Angeles Area and the San Francisco Bay Area at an estimated total cost of $6 billion.[183] The proposal, if technologically feasible at the costs he has cited, would make Hyperloop travel cheaper than any other mode of transport for such long distances.[184]

Donations and non-profits

In 2012 Musk took the Giving Pledge, thereby committing to give the majority of his wealth to charitable causes either during his lifetimes or in his will.[230] In 2014 Musk donated $1 million to a museum dedicated to Nikola Tesla.[231] In 2020 Forbes gave Musk a philanthropy score of 1, because he had given away less than 1% of his net worth.[232] In November 2021, Musk donated $5.7 billion of Tesla's shares to charity.[233] He has endowed prizes at the X Prize Foundation, including $15 million to encourage innovation in addressing illiteracy and $100 million to reward improved carbon capture technology.[234][235][236][237] After the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, Musk facilitated sending Starlink systems purchased by other European nations and private funding to Ukraine for internet access and communication in the besieged country.[238] Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked Musk personally for the support of Ukraine and announced further talks between the two about space projects to take place after the war.

Fascinated by adventure and exploration since his childhood, Raphaël Domjan is today an eco-explorer active in protecting the planet, its biodiversity and atmosphere. Through visionary projects and audacious challenges, this Swiss national wants to show that renewable sources of energy are reliable, efficient and economically viable.

" Using innovation, the spirit of exploration and the dream to change our society and create a better world" - this is what drives Raphael Domjan.

As Global Solar Eco Air Force and Global Solar Eco Navy Visionary Officer, Mr. Domjan engages with a variety of scientists, physicists, engineers and investors interested in mainstreaming solar power in the Nautical, Aeronautical and Aerospace Industries all around the World.

In 2005, he set up an association and surrounded himself with people able to help him realize his project PlanetSolar. Five years later, a trimaran 35 metres long, 23 metres wide, with solar panels covering a surface of 537 m2 was launched.

The MS Tûranor PlanetSolar's port of departure and arrival was Monaco. With a crew of three, he set sail at the helm of 'his' solar boat on 27 September 2010, heading west in search of the sun. PlanetSolar returned with its Swiss skipper to 'le Rocher' on 4 May 2012 to complete the first solar-powered voyage around the world. This was a record.

The sky was clear, the stars shining brightly and another idea came to him: approach space, see the curvature of the earth and observe the stars during the day using solar energy!

With this even more audacious project, Raphaël Domjan wants to continue demonstrating the potential of renewable energy. "Having circumnavigated the world in a solar boat, I wanted to go further and show that solar energy can enable us to do things that cannot be done with fossil fuels."

This was the beginning of a new eco-adventure that was launched in March 2014 with the name SolarStratos. The aim of the mission is to make the first-ever manned solar-flight to the stratosphere. As with PlanetSolar, Raphaël Domjan is looking for ways to improve our knowledge and expertise in the development of technologies to create a sustainable world. In his mind, "SolarStratos is a symbol of the pioneering spirit, of the dream, of innovation with the aim of demonstrating the potential of renewable energies and energy efficiency."

Arnold Schwarzenegger
Global Eco Army, Navy and Air Force

Chief Warrior Officer

Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger (/ˈʃvɑːrtsnɛɡər/;[1][a] German: [ˈaʁnɔlt ˈʃvaʁtsn̩ˌʔɛɡɐ]; born July 30, 1947) is an Austrian-American actor, filmmaker, businessman, author, and former professional bodybuilder and politician.[2] He served as the 38th Governor of California from 2003 to 2011. As of 2019, he is the most recent Republican governor of California. Schwarzenegger began lifting weights at the age of 15. He won the Mr. Universe title at age 20 and went on to win the Mr. Olympia contest seven times, remaining a prominent presence in bodybuilding and writing many books and articles on the sport. The Arnold Sports Festival, considered the second most important professional bodybuilding event in recent years,[3] is named after him. He is widely considered to be one of the greatest bodybuilders of all time, as well as the sport's most charismatic ambassador.[4]

After successful careers in bodybuilding, Hollywood and politics, the Governator is fighting for Mother Earth. Arnold Schwarzenegger explains in his own words why he's all in as an eco-warrior.

Quote: "Positive thinking can be contagious. Being surrounded by winners helps you develop into a winner"

Quote: "Be hungry for success, hungry to make your mark, hungry to be seen and to be heard and to have effect. And as you move up and become successful, make sure also to be hungry for helping others."

Quote: "What is the point of being on this Earth if you are going to be like everyone else?"

As Chief Warrior Officer, Mr. Schwarzenegger is in charge to train our troops mentally and physically for any challenge or task that requires the strongest human endurance. He will ensure that our troops are in excellent shape for the task in hand by land, sea and air. His mentorship will create and manifest the courage for our troops in the battlefield. He will transform the impossible into possible, yes we can! attitude all around the World.

Mr. Schwarzenegger will improve our Planet's economy without impairing our environment. He will be a passionate defender of our Planet Earth Environment, providing real leadership to protect our precious land, air, and water.

He believes that part of our Planet's greatness lies in its natural reources and beauty. What we do to our Planet must improve our quality of life, and environmental damage runs counter to that. Even from an economic perspective, our environment must be protected. If we have beaches soiled by oil spills, tourists will not come. If we log our forests irresponsibly, stream beds will be destroyed and our fishing industry will be damaged.

Mr. Schwarzeneger believes we can improve our Worldwide Economy without impairing our environment, and will govern by this belief. He will assemble a team of environmental advisors that will elaborate on key issues.

Breathing clean and healthy air is the right of all Citizens of the World.

California’s Clean Air Act was the model for the federal Clean Air Act and California  always led the nation in clean air programs. As governor, he examined the federal exemption of new sources of industrial air pollution from “new source review” and proposed state regulations to ensure that new facilities do not worsen air quality.

Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, KG, KT, PC, ADC (William Arthur Philip Louis;[fn 1] born 21 June 1982) is a member of the British royal family. He is the elder son of Charles, Prince of Wales, and Diana, Princess of Wales. Since birth, he has been second in the line of succession to the British throne.

Quote: " Twenty years on I still feel the love she gave us and that  is a statement to her massive heart and her amazing ability to be a great mother"

Quote: " People say it's not ambitious, but is actually quite ambitious wanting to help people"

Quote: " My guiding principles in life are to be honest, genuine, thoughtful and caring. "

Prince William has announced a multi-million pound prize for “visionaries” working to solve “Earth’s greatest environmental problems,” from climate change to air pollution. The Earthshot Prize will be awarded to five winners, every year, for the next 10 years. The initiative’s goal is to provide “at least 50 solutions to the world’s greatest problems by 2030.”

The prize was designed by and will initially be handled by the Royal Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge — headed by Prince William and Kate Middleton.

More than 60 organizations and experts were consulted in the process; in time, the Earthshot Prize will likely become an independent organization that continues to involve environmental NGOs, according to a press release from Kensington Palace.

This year, the initiative will debut a series of “Earthshot challenges,” according to its website, with a goal of “[seeking] answers to the biggest issues currently facing the planet, including: climate and energy, nature and biodiversity, oceans, air pollution and fresh water.”

As Global Eco Navy Admiral, Prince William will assist in bringing to fruition the most challenging solutions to reduce plastic pollution all around the World and convert salt water into drinking water. He will also contribute with his philantropic support to promote our Global Eco Navy around the World.

As Global Eco Air Force 5 Star General, Prince William will assist in providing  a Prize that aims to encourage transformative environmental solutions — especially for communities most vulnerable to the negative effects of climate change. He will also contribute with his philanthropic support to promote our Global Eco Air Force around the World.

Earthshot Prize winners will involve a significant cash-prize, as well as public recognition at an annual ceremony. Submissions will be accepted from “individuals, teams or collaborations — scientists, activists, economists, leaders, governments, banks, businesses, cities, and countries,” the press release notes, with a goal of sparking a global movement by inspiring “collaborative projects that would not otherwise have been pursued.”

In a statement, Prince William said that humanity now faces a “stark choice” between maintaining the status quo — which, he argues, will “irreparably” damage the planet — or cultivating innovative solutions. “The next ten years present us with one of our greatest tests, William said, framing the Earthshot Prize as part of “a decade of action to repair the earth.”

William was educated at four schools in the United Kingdom and studied for a degree at the University of St Andrews. During a gap year, he spent time in Chile, Belize, and Africa. In December 2006, he completed 44 weeks of training as an officer cadet and was commissioned in the Blues and Royals regiment. In April 2008, William completed pilot training at Royal Air Force College Cranwell, then underwent helicopter flight training and became a full-time pilot with the RAF Search and Rescue Force in early 2009. His service with the British Armed Forces ended in September 2013.[3][4] He then trained for a civil pilot's License, and spent over two years working as a pilot for the East Anglian Air Ambulance.

Though Major-General Sir Sebastian Roberts, General Officer commanding the Household Division, had said William's deployment was possible, the Prince's position as second-in-line to the throne and the convention of ministers advising against placing that person into dangerous situations cast doubts on William's chances of seeing combat. These doubts increased after Prince Harry's deployment was cancelled in 2007 due to "specific threats".

William, instead, went on to train in the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force, obtaining his commission as a sub-lieutenant in the former and flying officer in the latter—both broadly equivalent to the army rank of lieutenant. After completing his training, William undertook an attachment with the Royal Air Force, undergoing an intensive, four-month training course at RAF Cranwell.[43][44] Upon completing the course on 11 April 2008, he was presented with his RAF wings by his father,[45] who had received his own wings after training at Cranwell.[46] During this secondment, William flew to Afghanistan in a C-17 Globemaster that repatriated the body of Trooper Robert Pearson.[47]

William was then seconded to train with the Royal Navy from June to August 2008, during which he spent three weeks at the Britannia Royal Naval College training on units of the surface fleet and submarines, as well as with the Fleet Air Arm and the Royal Marines.[48] He spent a day on submarine HMS Talent.[49] During a five-week deployment on HMS Iron Duke in the Caribbean, he took part in a joint operation with the United States Coast Guard that identified and captured a speedboat carrying 900 kg (2,000 lb) of cocaine worth about £40 million.[50][51] The ship also took part in other raids.[52]

Because of William's future royal role, a long-term career in the military was considered out of the question; due to his position, his desire to see active service was unlikely to be fulfilled. William originally joined the military on a short-service commission lasting three years. It was announced in September 2008, however, that he would be extending his forces career in 2008 by accepting another secondment that included working at the Ministry of Defence (MOD) and non-operational flying with the Army Air Corps.[53] It was later announced that he would transfer from the Army to the RAF to train as a full-time search and rescue helicopter pilot.[54]

“I have a dream, a common dream of the people devoting to renewable energy source around the world, that for the blue sky and white cloud of the later generations, qualified products are used to realize renewable energy substitution.

I have a dream that one day throughout the whole world, renewable energy sources will take the dominant position.

I have a dream that one day my entire country fellows, even the global citizens, know about solar energy and make full use of it.

I have a dream that one d ay solar industry will be as advanced as IT industry, as mature as electric home appliances industry, and as largescaled and automatic as automobile industry.

I have a dream that one day the sky will be much bluer, the water will be more limpid; our homeland will be full of sunshine, tranquil with no war.”

Michael Rubens Bloomberg[2] (born February 14, 1942) is an American politician, businessman, and author. He was mayor of New York City from 2002 to 2013. He is a candidate in the Democratic Party primaries for the 2020 United States presidential election.

Bloomberg grew up in Medford, Massachusetts and attended Johns Hopkins University and Harvard Business School. He began his career at the securities brokerage Salomon Brothers, before forming his own company in 1981 spending the next twenty years as its chairman and CEO. He is the co-founder, CEO, and majority owner of Bloomberg L.P., a global financial services, software and mass media company that bears his name, and is known for its Bloomberg Terminal, a computer software system providing financial data widely used in the global financial services industry.

As of November 2019, this made him the 9th richest person in the United States and the 14th richest person in the world; his net worth was estimated at $58 billion.[3] Since signing The Giving Pledge whereby billionaires pledge to give away at least half of their wealth, Bloomberg has given away $8.2 billion.[4] Of $3.3 billion he gave to Johns Hopkins University, his $1.8 billion gift in 2018 for student financial aid was the largest private donation ever made to a higher education institution.[5]

Quote: Being an entrepreneur isn't really about starting a business. It's a way of looking at the world: seeing opportunity where others see obstacles, taking risks when others take refuge."

"The best leaders INCENTIVIZE, INSPIRE & EMPOWER their teams to be creative and innovative."

"The basics of commerce don't change: You've got to have something that people need, something that they can't get elsewhere. And the more they can't get it elsewhere, the more they need it."

"Don't be afraid to assert yourself, have confidence and in your abilities and don't let the bastards get you down."

As Chief Philanthropy Officer, Mr. Bloomberg will provide a financial donation to plant billions of trees around the World.

Further, Mr. Bloomberg will donate a special software designed to keep track of our Planet's efforts to reduce the pollution in our water, air and soil.

Last, but not least, Mr. Bloomberg will provide advertisement for our Global Eco Army, Navy and Airforce all around the World to reach greater masses with the objective to have them join for action.

Bloomberg served as the 108th mayor of New York City, holding office for three consecutive terms, beginning his first in 2002. A lifelong Democrat before seeking elective office, Bloomberg switched his party registration in 2001 to run for mayor as a Republican. He defeated opponent Mark J. Green in a close election held just weeks after the September 11 terrorist attacks.

He won a second term in 2005 and left the Republican Party two years later. Bloomberg campaigned to change the city's term limits law and was elected to his third term in 2009 as an independent on the Republican ballot line. His final term as mayor ended on December 31, 2013.

Bloomberg also served as chair of the board of trustees at his alma mater, Johns Hopkins University, from 1996 to 2002. After a brief stint as a full-time philanthropist, Bloomberg re-assumed the position of CEO at Bloomberg L.P. by the end of 2014.

Bloomberg officially launched his campaign for the Democratic Party's nomination in the 2020 presidential election on November 24, 2019, following weeks of speculation that he would join the race as a late entry.[6]

Bloomberg attended Johns Hopkins University, where he joined the fraternity Phi Kappa Psi. In 1962, as a sophomore, he constructed the school mascot's (the blue jay's) costume.[17] He graduated in 1964 with a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering. In 1966, he graduated from Harvard Business School with a Master of Business Administration.[18][19]

In March 2009, Forbes reported Bloomberg's wealth at $16 billion, a gain of $4.5 billion over the previous year, the world's biggest increase in wealth in 2009.[36] At that time, there were only four fortunes in the U.S. that were larger (although the Walmart family fortune is split among four people). He had moved from 142nd to 17th in the Forbes list of the world's billionaires in only two years.[37][38] Subsequently, Forbes reported his wealth at $22 billion, then $31 billion, then $43.3 billion, and ranked him 11th-, then 10th-, then 6th-richest in the U.S.[24][39][40] As of November 2019, Bloomberg was the 14th richest person in the world, with a net worth estimated at $58 billion.[3]

During his second term as the mayor of New York City, Bloomberg unveiled PlaNYC: A Greener, Greater New York on April 22, 2007, to fight global warming, protect the environment and prepare for the projected 1 million additional people expected to be living in the city by the year 2030.[114]

Under PlaNYC, in just 6 years New York City reduced citywide greenhouse gas emissions by 19% since 2005 and was on track to achieve a 30% reduction ahead of the PlaNYC 2030 goal.[115] In October 2007, as part of PlaNYC, Bloomberg launched the Million Trees NYC initiative, which aimed to plant and care for one million trees throughout the city in the next decade. In November 2015, New York City planted its one millionth tree, two years ahead of the original 10-year schedule.[116]

In 2008, Bloomberg convened the New York City Panel on Climate Change (NPCC), an effort to prepare the city for climate change.[117] In 2012, Travel + Leisure readers voted New York City the "Dirtiest American City," for having the most extant litter.[118] Bloomberg has been involved in motivating other cities to make changes and has spoken about reducing carbon dioxide emissions, using cleaner and more efficient fuels, using congestion pricing in New York City, and encouraging public transportation.[119]

Bloomberg unveiled the Special Initiative for Rebuilding and Resiliency (SIRR) in June 2013, after the city was affected by Hurricane Sandy in October 2012. The $20 billion initiative laid out extensive plans to protect New York City against future impacts of climate change.[120] On September 26, 2013, Bloomberg announced that his administration's air pollution reduction efforts had resulted in the best air quality in New York City in more than 50 years.[121] The majority of the air quality improvement was attributed to the phasing out of heavy polluting heating oils through New York's "Clean Heat" program.[122] As a result of the improved air quality, the average life expectancy of New Yorkers had increased three years during Bloomberg's tenure, compared to 1.8 years in the rest of the country.[123]

By 2017 Bloomberg donated 100 million dollars to the campaign Beyond Coal, that helped close over half of the US coal power stations, since 2011 when it was expanded due to his financial help. In 2017 he donated 64 million dollars more, the day after Scott Pruit began to abolish Obama's Clean Power Plan.[124]

In 2019 Bloomberg with Sierra club and other organization launched "Beyond Carbon" an initiative to complete transition of USA to non fossil energy sources.[125]

Michael Bloomberg with Jerry Brown launched and are leading the America's Pledge: a coalition of cities, businesses, states and more in the US to reduce greenhouse gas emissions[126][127] The organization contains 68% of the GDP and 65% of the population of United States. In COP25 it presented a report named "ACCELERATING AMERICA’S PLEDGE" in which it explained that already existing commitments can cut USA greenhouse gas emissions by 19% by 2025 and by 25% by 2030. Accelerating local action can lower emissions by 37% by the year 2030 and if federal support will be adjusted by 49% by the same year relative to the level of the year 2005.[128][129]

On 18 September 2009, Van Buuren married Erika van Thiel.[23] Their daughter Fenna was born in July 2011.[24] Van Buuren announced just hours before he was due to headline the main stage at Tomorrowland (27 July 2013) that his wife had given birth to a son, Remy.[25]

On 16 February 2018, Van Buuren explored his family history in an episode of the TV series Verborgen verleden, the Dutch version of the UK series Who Do You Think You Are?.[26]

In 1996, Van Buuren released EP and Push on Timeless Records. Van Buuren had his first success with a track called "Blue Fear", which was released under the Cyber Records label in 1997. Another successful track, "Communication", was released under the same label and became popular in Ibiza, Spain in the summer of 1999.[27] After being signed to AM PM Records,[21] this track entered the UK Singles Chart at No. 18 in 2000.[28]

In the beginning of 1999, Van Buuren started his label Armind together with United Recordings. The first release, Gig – "One", was well received. The second release, "Touch Me" under the name Rising Star, was signed to Ministry of Sound in the UK, before the record was released. By the time of his third release, Gimmick – "Free" was signed to R&S Records. During this year, he remixed the first two singles of Gouryella (Gouryella and Walhalla) and, under the guise of Rising Star, produced a remix of L'Esperanza, a song by Airscape.[29][30]

The first single of Van Buuren's fifth studio album, Intense, titled "This Is What It Feels Like", featured Canadian singer and songwriter Trevor Guthrie, and was released on 5 April 2013. The single nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording.[62] The tour for the album, Armin Only: Intense, was announced on 17 October 2013.[63]

Barack Hussein Obama II (/bəˈrɑːk huːˈseɪn oʊˈbɑːmə/ (listen);[1] born August 4, 1961) is an American attorney and politician who served as the 44th president of the United States from 2009 to 2017. A member of the Democratic Party, he was the first African American president of the United States. He previously served as a U.S. senator from Illinois from 2005 to 2008 and an Illinois state senator from 1997 to 2004.

Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii. After graduating from Columbia University in 1983, he worked as a community organizer in Chicago. In 1988, he enrolled in Harvard Law School, where he was the first black president of the Harvard Law Review. After graduating, he became a civil rights attorney and an academic, teaching constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School from 1992

Quote: "CHANGE WILL NOT COME IF WE WAIT FOR some other person or some other time. WE ARE THE ONES WE'VE BEEN WAITING FOR. WE ARE THE CHANGE THAT WE SEEK."

Quote: "Life doesn't count for much unless you're willing to do your small part to leave our children - all of our children - a better World. Even if it's difficult. Even if the work seems great. Even if we don't get very far in our lifetime."

Quote: "Your voice can change the world"

He represented the 13th district for three terms in the Illinois Senate from 1997 until 2004, when he ran for the U.S. Senate. He received national attention in 2004 with his March primary win, his well-received July Democratic National Convention keynote address, and his landslide November election to the Senate. In 2008, he was nominated for president a year after his campaign began, after a close primary campaign against Hillary Clinton.

He was elected over Republican John McCain and was inaugurated on January 20, 2009. Nine months later, he was named the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize laureate.

After winning re-election by defeating Republican opponent Mitt Romney, Obama was sworn in for a second term in 2013. He advocated for gun control in response to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, indicating support for a ban on assault weapons, and issued wide-ranging executive actions concerning global warming and immigration.

Two years after graduating from Columbia, Obama moved from New York to Chicago when he was hired as director of the Developing Communities Project, a church-based community organization originally comprising eight Catholic parishes in Roseland, West Pullman, and Riverdale on Chicago's South Side.

He worked there as a community organizer from June 1985 to May 1988.[51][101] He helped set up a job training program, a college preparatory tutoring program, and a tenants' rights organization in Altgeld Gardens.[102] Obama also worked as a consultant and instructor for the Gamaliel Foundation, a community organizing institute.[103]

Despite being offered a full scholarship to Northwestern University School of Law, Obama enrolled at Harvard Law School in the fall of 1988, living in nearby Somerville, Massachusetts.[107] He was selected as an editor of the Harvard Law Review at the end of his first year,[108] president of the journal in his second year,[102][109] and research assistant to the constitutional scholar Laurence Tribe while at Harvard for two years.[110] During his summers, he returned to Chicago, where he worked as a summer associate at the law firms of Sidley Austin in 1989 and Hopkins & Sutter in 1990.[111] After graduating with a JD degree magna cum laude[112] from Harvard in 1991, he returned to Chicago.[108] Obama's election as the first black president of the Harvard Law Review gained national media attention[102][109] and led to a publishing contract and advance for a book about race relations,[113] which evolved into a personal memoir. The manuscript was published in mid-1995 as Dreams from My Father.[113]

In 1991, Obama accepted a two-year position as Visiting Law and Government Fellow at the University of Chicago Law School to work on his first book.[113][114] He then taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School for twelve years, first as a lecturer from 1992 to 1996, and then as a senior lecturer from 1996 to 2004.[115]

He joined Davis, Miner, Barnhill & Galland, a 13-attorney law firm specializing in civil rights litigation and neighborhood economic development, where he was an associate for three years from 1993 to 1996, then of counsel from 1996 to 2004. In 1994, he was listed as one of the lawyers in Buycks-Roberson v. Citibank Fed. Sav. Bank, 94 C 4094 (N.D. Ill.).[117] This class action lawsuit was filed in 1994 with Selma Buycks-Roberson as lead plaintiff and alleged that Citibank Federal Savings Bank had engaged in practices forbidden under the Equal Credit Opportunity Act and the Fair Housing Act.[118] The case was settled out of court.[119] Final judgment was issued on May 13, 1998, with Citibank Federal Savings Bank agreeing to pay attorney fees.

He sponsored a law that increased tax credits for low-income workers, negotiated welfare reform, and promoted increased subsidies for childcare.[126] In 2001, as co-chairman of the bipartisan Joint Committee on Administrative Rules, Obama supported Republican Governor Ryan's payday loan regulations and predatory mortgage lending regulations aimed at averting home foreclosures.[127][128]

During his 2004 general election campaign for the U.S. Senate, police representatives credited Obama for his active engagement with police organizations in enacting death penalty reforms

Obama sponsored legislation that would have required nuclear plant owners to notify state and local authorities of radioactive leaks, but the bill failed to pass in the full Senate after being heavily modified in committee.[158] Regarding tort reform, Obama voted for the Class Action Fairness Act of 2005 and the FISA Amendments Act of 2008, which grants immunity from civil liability to telecommunications companies complicit with NSA warrantless wiretapping operations.[159]

Obama held assignments on the Senate Committees for Foreign Relations, Environment and Public Works and Veterans' Affairs through December 2006.[173] In January 2007, he left the Environment and Public Works committee and took additional assignments with Health, Education, Labor and Pensions and Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs.[174] He also became Chairman of the Senate's subcommittee on European Affairs.[175]

bama addressed supporters and volunteers at Chicago's McCormick Place after his reelection and said: "Tonight you voted for action, not politics as usual. You elected us to focus on your jobs, not ours. And in the coming weeks and months, I am looking forward to reaching out and working with leaders of both parties."[208][209]

President Obama's 2011 State of the Union Address focused on themes of education and innovation, stressing the importance of innovation economics to make the United States more competitive

globally.

On February 17, 2009, Obama signed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, a $787 billion economic stimulus package aimed at helping the economy recover from the deepening worldwide recession.[251] The act includes increased federal spending for health care, infrastructure, education, various tax breaks and incentives, and direct assistance to individuals.[252]

The economy of the United States has grown faster than the other original NATO members by a wider margin under President Obama than it has anytime since the end of World War II.[284] The Organiz

ation for Economic Co-operation and Development credits the much faster growth in the United States to the stimulus plan of the US and the austerity measures in the European Union.[285]

Obama at a 2010 briefing on the BP oil spill at the Coast Guard Station Venice in Venice, Louisiana

On September 30, 2009, the Obama administration proposed new regulations on power plants, factories, and oil refineries in an attempt to limit greenhouse gas emissions and to curb global warming.[290][291]

On April 20, 2010, an explosion destroyed an offshore drilling rig at the Macondo Prospect in the Gulf of Mexico, causing a major sustained oil leak. Obama visited the Gulf, announced a federal investigation, and formed a bipartisan commission to recommend new safety standards, after a review by Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and concurrent Congressional hearings. He then announced a six-month moratorium on new deepwater drilling permits and leases, pending regulatory review.[292] As multiple efforts by BP failed, some in the media and public expressed confusion and criticism over various aspects of the incident, and stated a desire for more involvement by Obama and the federal government.[293]

In July 2013, Obama expressed reservations and said he "would reject the Keystone XL pipeline if it increased carbon pollution" or "greenhouse emissions."[294][295] Obama's advisers called for a halt to petroleum exploration in the Arctic in January 2013.[296] On February 24, 2015, Obama vetoed a bill that would have authorized the pipeline.[297] It was the third veto of Obama's presidency and his first major veto.[298]

Obama emphasized the conservation of federal lands during his term in office. He used his power under the Antiquities Act to create 25 new national monuments during his presidency and expand four others, protecting a total of 553,000,000 acres (224,000,000 ha) of federal lands and waters, more than any other U.S. president.[299][300][301][302]

Many commentators credit Obama with averting a threatened depression and pulling the economy back from the Great Recession.[514] According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Obama administration created 11.3 million jobs from the month after his first inauguration to the end of his term.[519]

A 2018 survey of historians by the American Political Science Association ranked Obama the 8th-greatest American President.[4] Obama gained 10 spots from the same survey in 2015 from the Brookings Institution that ranked Obama the 18th-greatest American President.[534]
